Idol-type Mapping: Songs

All of the translations linked here are my own work. Please DO NOT re-post or screenshot my work without permission.

The Idol-type mappings illustrate where each of the 11 main idols stand in terms of Character, Looks, and Songs. Each map includes side notes which I've translated. You can find these maps on pages 150 and 151 of the 5th Anniversary Book.

Songs

Strictly limited to solo songs up to this point, the idols were distributed on the map according to what kind of melodies appear frequently. Because of course the same idol can sing songs of various atmospheres, even if there is a tendency to hit the same spot on the map depending on the song, it’s interesting since it’s approached with a different genre.** More than half of the group falls towards the more idol-like “brilliant” end, but a diversity of music and expression can be seen in the results.

Tip #3:  Love, friendship, etc…what kind of themes are common?

As expected, there is a majority of solo songs containing lyrics expressing various forms of love. While not touched upon here, themes of friendship, youth, and dreams are sung in the unit songs. In Gekidan Shining and Theater Shining, since the songs are motifs of the play or movie plot, you can hear songs depicting an eccentric world of fantasy or a different era.

Translator’s Notes and Thoughts:

I believe that the Light vs. Deep spectrum refers to sound and…well, depth. XD I suppose in terms of music, if you pay attention the choice of instruments, the key that the song is in, lyrics, etc. as well as what kind of feelings are evoked, it might be easier to understand why each idol has their certain place on the map. Tokiya and Otoya share the biggest contrast when it comes to this element just by listening to their music, it’s easy to notice that Otoya’s songs tend to be lighter and happier while Tokiya’s are deeper and more sentimental.

**This sentence really confused me so I had to really think about what I knew about their music to try and figure out what this part was explaining. I think what it’s saying is that, even if two characters fall within the same area of the map, that same atmosphere can be conveyed with a different sound. For example, Ren and Ranmaru share very similar musical tendencies, and yet each idol’s music is very different from the other because they incorporate different genres.
