Novelty Translation: Secret Garden Party Episodes 01-04

"Secret Garden Party" was a campaign in 2019 featuring a collaboration between UtaPri and Cafe OHZAN. The Secret Garden Party Episodes are short stories printed on the backs of novelty cards included with purchases at the merchandise booth. The homepage for the event is archived here.

What better way to celebrate spring with a translation of Secret Garden Party!


My recent hobby has been collecting "novelty" cards from different shopping campaigns and keeping them in an album. Recently they've been printing "episodes" on the back of these cards, and I hadn't really taken the time to read them since I was so busy.

There isn't really any crucial content in these stories, just some fluffy and romantic scenarios from our boys. For Secret Garden Party, there's 15 stories: one for each idol, and four group scenarios.

The first four episodes are a group scenario with Masato, Natsuki, and Ai, and three solo episodes featuring Reiji, Otoya, and Tokiya respectively.

Translator's Notes

I think the biggest challenge was translating Masato's lines. They make sense in context, but his choice of words and his use of speech is typically one of the most difficult to translate (the others being Ranmaru and Camus). For example, Masato seems to be expressing that Natsuki's forwardness towards the reader shows how Natsuki really feels (and might be a bit troublesome, or simply embarassing for Masato to witness as Ai points out). The original Japanese is 「気持ちが距離の近さに現れている」 which literally means "Emotion is expressed through close distance." Without any context, this would be a strange line. But knowing that Natsuki is the type ignore personal space when he's excited, it makes perfect sense. In some of these stories you really have to not only read their words, but imagine their actions as well! ☆
